Artist Statement

My paintings are about the space that lies between perception and reality. Not a physical space but a psychological, emotional, and intellectual one. Because that space is invisible, I chose to impose the idea of that space onto the devices of pictorial space. By contorting the illusion of depth within a painting and manipulating the rules of linear and atmospheric perspective, I more closely represent the mental landscape of the relationship of one person to another or of one person to the environment that surrounds them. It is a space of which the viewer will be uncertain, they may realize they do not need to understand something for it to be beautiful.

things that surprise

things that change

things that are indefinable

things that are indecisive

things that are curious

things that are mysteries

things that I have to figure out

things that are smart

things that are confusing

things that are beautiful

things that are awkward

things that are fun

things that are red

things that contradict

things that are eccentric

things that happen everyday

things that are absurd

things that go unnoticed

things that mean what they say

things that I dream about

things that make me laugh

things that I deny

things that are speechless

things that are eloquent

things that sarcasm will not fix

things that are thoughtful

things that are elusive

things that have faded

things that end
